Mutare, Zimbabwe – A National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) freight train traveling from Mutare to Machipanda derailed on Monday night, February 19th, resulting in the tragic deaths of all three crew members onboard.

The accident occurred around 9:00 pm near a sharp curve between the two towns. Initial investigations suggest a possible brake failure that caused the train to lose control and derail.

The train, carrying wagons loaded with chrome and granite, went off the tracks and plunged into a nearby gorge. Sadly, the three crew members were trapped and unable to escape.

“Sadly the three (3) NRZ Crews were trapped and could not make it to safety. Their identities cannot be divulged until their next of kin have been advised,” reads a statement.

The NRZ expressed its deepest condolences to the families of the deceased, offering prayers and support to the grieving families.

“The NRZ board, management and staff would like to express sincere condolences to the families of the hardworking, dedicated crew members who shall always be remembered by the Railways family.

“Our thoughts are with their families and we pray for God to comfort and strengthen them in these very difficult times.”

Authorities are currently investigating the exact cause of the accident, with a full report expected to be released once the investigation is complete.

“Investigations are still underway to determine the exact cause of the accident, after which full details will be disclosed.”
