Freedom at last for Zimbabwe7 activists

The seven activists arrested in May 2019 at the Robert Mugabe International Airport in Harare,  on their return from a peaceful resistance workshop in Maldives have been acquitted by the state.

Farirai Gumbonzvanda, Stabile Dewa, Rita Nyampinga, Nyasha Frank Mpahlo, George Makoni, Tatenda Mombeyarara, and Gamuchirai Mukura were being charged with subversion.

However today the state withdrew the case and  absolved the activists and case will proceed by way of summons.

The Zimbabwe Lawyers For Human Rights (ZLHR) in a statement said, “what a spectacular end to the persecution of 7 pro democracy campaigners who have been removed from remand today after they were arrested & charged with subverting constitutional govt in May 2020 for plotting to overthrow President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s govt.”

The Zimbabwe seven were represented by the ZLHR legal team Roselyn Hanzi , Jeremiah Bamu and Jessie Majome endured attending court for 15 months without being put on trial.

If convicted, they could have been imprisoned for up to 20 years in jail.

Writing on his Facebook page one of the acquitted, Tatenda Mombeyarara said he was happy that freedom and justice had been saved.

He wrote, “Freedom for the #Zim7 was a momentus campaign both locally and internationally as friends, colleagues, ordinary citizens and progressive poured out against our unjustified  arrest and detention … Thank you our lawyers , civil society colleagues for the moral and political support …We add our voice to say #FreeHopewellNow  #FreeJacobNgarivhumeNow
