The Zimbabwe Republic Police has arrested over two thousand illegal miners in possession of machetes as it intensifies Operation Chikorokoza Ngachipere.

Machete-wielding gangs are terrorizing locals in gold-rich areas.

Hundreds of people have been injured while others have lost their lives in the mine wars.

Speaking to a local radio station yesterday (Thursday) Police Assistant Commissioner, Paul Nyathi said the Jumbo Mine still remains a no go area while urging citizens against harbouring criminals.

“As of today, we have arrested over 2180 machete-wielding gangs, illegal panners and other people who were involved in various crimes related to the anarchy and the disturbances at mining sites throughout the country particularly the Jumbo area, Mazowe area and Shamva area.

“Jumbo mine is still a sealed-off area,” he said.

Parliament has since launched investigations into the operations of the terror gangs popularly known as Mashurugwi.

Several high profile figures have been accused of sponsoring the machete-wielding gangs and government has been castigated for failing to find viable ways to curb this problem.
