United Kingdom House of Lord’s member, Peter Hain has called for stronger sanctions on President Emmerson Mnangagwa over alleged human rights violations.

Hain, an anti-apartheid campaigner said by supporting the liberation struggle he had hoped for a better situation in Zimbabwe.

In a letter addressed to UK foreign secretary, Dominic Raab dated 27 April 2021, Hain demanded that more sanctions be imposed on President Mnangagwa and his administration.

“In July last year, following the abduction , torture and harrassment of Zimbabwean Mp Joanna Mamombe and two of her female colleagues. I asked for sanctions against key Zimbabwean governmment ministers and officials.”

In the letter Hain goes on to ask Raab “what steps HMG is taking to the Zimbabwean government to account for these gross violations of human rights?”

The Zimbabwean government has been under the spotlight for rights abuses with international condemnation over it’s crackdown on dissenting voices.

However, the Zanu PF led government has spiritedly denied any wrongdoings saying, “the law is taking its course on those who break it”.

The governmment has mantained that it is clean and that the ruling Zanu PF party will push for punishment of those who invite sanctions.

Meanwhile relations between Mnangagwa’s administration and the UK seem to have withered following several reports of alleged rights abuses in the country.
