The Passenger Association of Zimbabwe (PAZ) has condemned violence in public transport after a series of violent acts in buses.

PAZ President, Tafadzwa Goliati, said that passengers should report cases to the police and should never take the law into their own hands.

Goliati said, “People should not take the law into their own hands but rather they should report all cases to the police for further management. We have had cases where lives were lost due to instant justice. It is some level of public illiteracy to ignore the law where it should be instituted. The law encompasses some of the trivial issues we take for granted. Insulting someone is a crime on its own.”

He also blamed some conductors and drivers from ZUPCO who he said harass vulnerable passengers.

“Passengers like those in charge of any form of public transportation system are vulnerable to violence, verbal, emotional and or physical abuse by transport crews. There are lot of bus crews from the private and ZUPCO buses who lack the integral part of public relations. Often some ZUPCO drivers go to the extent of harassing passengers and dragging them off the buses. The public question the literacy of such drivers and conductors. This is the least behavior the public expect from people who are leaving their towels wet at home, because it the same passengers they are harassing and embracing who make them enjoy life and development,” he said.

He also urged people to solve disputes amicably and called violence a “primitive way of solving issues.”

“People should find amicable ways of addressing their differences. However, this being difficult because some are usually under the influence of drugs, their socio- economic status and status are the major contributors of ignorance to the law. It takes a little effort to shun this primitive way of solving issues with violence. Only the sixth sense has to be used.”

Just this month, a ZUPCO conductor was shot dead under unclear circumstances and there have been videos of people fighting in ZUPCO buses circulating.
