There is a huge possibility that Dr Oliver “Tuku” Mtukudzi’s life and musical career could be made into a movie after an interesting conversation happened on Twitter a few days ago.

Producer and writer, Raisedon Baya, started the conversation by challenging Zimbabwean film makers to initiate a project in honor of the late great Dr Tuku.

Baya tweeted, “I always think there should be a big Oliver Mtukudzi musical movie. It could simply be titled “TUKU”.

If Zim doesn’t do it then let’s not be surprised when one day we wake up to hear that South Africans are doing it. If I was in government, it would be a project I would invest in.”

This post attracted a comment from Professor Jonathan Moyo who gave ideas on how to go about it without involving the government by involving private companies.

“Forget government. You go for it man and get the private sector in Zim & SA (like Old Mutual, Econet, Delta, Innscor and Nandos) to support. Rope in @nigelchanakira and @BusisaMoyo to help you mobilize the resources. It would be a global winner. Do it for Netflix. Thank me later!” said Prof Moyo.

The late icon’s daughter then gave a hint that they have already started on the process and also hinted on probably getting advise from Prof Moyo who she worked with at Pax Afro.

Selmor said, “We are working on it. Was going to come to you for advice Prof. Now that its in the open let me come to your DM now sir”.

Baya then called on all artists to assist on the visionary project. He tweeted, “So glad @SelmorMtukudzi and her sister are already working on the idea. We should all assist. Done well there is no way this musical movie will fail to grace all big international stages and festivals.”

His tweet got good feedback from Bulawayo based Mgcini Nyoni who offered scripting services.Nyoni said, “Exciting project! Would love to be in the scripting department.”It seems that Busisa Moyo and Josey Mahachi also showed enthusiasm to be part of the project which prompted Prof Moyo to urge Baya not to sleep on it.

The Professor said, “Take note @RaisedonB that @BusisaMoyo is here and on board on this one, please don’t drop the ball. Make it happen. I also note that @MahachieJosey is on board. She has a good connections in South Africa and Nigeria for a project like this. Where is @nigelchanakira?”If ever this project does come to being, it could be a welcome gesture to celebrate a legend whose music is of course immortal.

With Prof Moyo seemingly on board and being active in the project, the proposed musical movie could be doable as everyone who lived during his reign as Minister of Information knows the man’s love for art.

This could just be a start of a culture of immortalizing Zimbabwean heroes and heroines across all disciplines of the arts. Such a thing could be done for Dambudzo Marechera, Leornard Dembo, Fanyana Dube, Cont Mhlanga, Dorothy Masuka and Charles Mungoshi among other such prolific figures
