The Annual National Sports Awards (ANSAS) will not be held this year due to the negative impact of the COVID 19 pandemic on sport.

This was revealed by Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) chairman, Gerald Mlotshwa.

Mlotshwa said that the ANSAs could not be held because of lack of sporting activity in this past year.

“(We will not be having ) National Sports Awards this year regarding what happened last year for the simple reason that we had COVID. There were not too many tournaments, local and international that our athletes were able to compete in,” he said.

The SRC chairman added that they were planning on a less glamourous virtual ceremony to celebrate the few athletes who excelled in their disciplines. “What we are planning for, however, is a form of recognition recognizing those sport persons, sport disciplines that (did well) in their respective disciplines last year. It will be a virtual recognition. We are working on that and how best to have many people accessing it in a way befits.

“There are sports that carried on last year, there were achievements not withstanding COVID 19. It’s the SRC saying well done naming the particular individuals. We are going to have prizes, certificates and trophies,” said Mlotshwa.

The SRC said that they will announce in due course how the virtual ceremony will be held.
