Critics of President  Emmerson Mnangagwa are having a field day on the internet mocking him for flying to Karanda to officially open a single lane bridge.

Famed for blowing internet whenever they get the opportunity, Twimbos are arguing that Mnangagwa has adopted unpresidential approach of officially opening anything including a mortuary in Gutu.

The bridge which is 180 metres long, crosses over Ruya River and will significantly reduce distance between Bindura and Mt Darwin.

Mnangagwa has in the past officially opened a mortuary, a 20 kilometer stretch of Harare- Beitbridge road and officially handed over new coaches to ZUPCO among other minor projects.

However his critics were having none of it choosing to barrage him despite others justifying the Karanda Brigde opening.

One Nickson Museyamwa on Facebook wrote,”For 2021, this is what we can do. Surely we need God’s intervention. The road leading to the bridge isn’t tarred”.

On Twitter , @Cde Never Maswerasei said “Why single lane bridges in 2021? Do we not anticipate that the people of Karanda and surrounding areas will some day own more cars that will increase traffic in the next 10 to 20 years? Will we need and/be able to go back and reconstruct or expand this bridge?”

Prominent journalist and cum government critic, Hopewell Chin’ono chimed in, “Karanda bridge is an example of LOOTING!. Media reports say $5.1 million was allocated. Due to incompetence the bridge was swept away in 2019. More money was allocated, then we ended up with what the President opened yesterday which is on the right picture.”

Another twimbo @maDube added, “Bridges like these should be commissioned by local councilors rather than a whole president. We expect Mnangagwa to Commission mega-factories and major infrastructure projects. Grand INCOMPETENCE!”

Human Rights Activist and lawyer , Taona Denhere replying to Presidential spokesperson George Charamba wrote  “@Jamwanda2 This is tugwi bridge 1928 Rhodesia.  So this how far ZANUPF gvt has  defied the developmental trajectory by taking us anti clockwise  into early 20th century.Rather than taking us clockwise into high technological advancements of 21st century  4th Industrial revolution”.
@MISSCHINDIYA wrote ,  “It’s a one lane bridge 😭😭😭Come on, Berchinough Bridge was built on 1935 and still looks way ahead of Karanda Bridge.Apa image the resources that were use just to travel there and commission the “bridge”.

However, whilst addressing people in Mount Darwin at Runya river President Mnangagwa said that government has set aside $33,6 billion for the Second Phase of the Emergency Roads Rehabilitation Programme (ERRP2).

“My Government heard the outcry of our people as movement on our roads has become cumbersome, costly and indeed risky.
“As a result, on February 9, 2021, the Government declared the state of all our roads a National Disaster, thereby giving impetus to the operationalization of the Second Phase of the Emergency Roads Rehabilitation Programme (ERRP2). This programme is vital given that roads are intricately linked with our economy within the country and beyond.

“Furthermore, a good transport network is an important cog in the realization of a wide array of the sector priorities and objectives outlined in the National Development Strategy 1, as we journey towards Vision 2030.

“Hence, my administration remains ceased with the provision and maintenance of sustainable infrastructure and other associated services.

“In this regard, $33,6 billion has been set aside for the second phase of the emergency roads rehabilitation programme. The programme sets out an ambitious and yet achievable target of rehabilitating 10 000km of road infrastructure of which 1 000km is in Mashonaland Central Province,” he said.

The government has been criticized for neglecting roads with some areas inaccessible when bridges are swept away by the heavy torrential downpours witnessed this year.
