Former Zanu PF Chitungwiza councillor for ward 7, Charamba Mlambo together with hordes of other ruling party youths, last Fiday allegedly assaulted council employees who were on duty.

According to eyewitnesses who spoke to this publication, Chitungwiza Municipality sewerage supervisor, Philemon Tarutira and his colleagues were in the process of unclogging a sewer pipe when they faced what appeared to be ‘politically motivated violence’.

The group has not been able to complete its work because of fear of victimisation.

Charamba Mlambo and some youths allegedly from the ruling party arrived at the scene in a vehicle inscribed ‘Chitungwiza South’.

Acting Chitungwiza Municipality Town Clerk, Tonderayi Kasu in a statement condemned the rowdy behaviour and urged citizens to approach council offices with their concerns rather than attack workers carrying out their duties.

The statement however did not disclose any names of the assailants.

“Chitungwiza Municipality has learnt with utmost disgust the wanton harassment of its workforce during the course of the discharging duties; making reference to an incident that occurred on Friday (21st of February 2020) in the afternoon, when a mob of people launched a politically motivated attack and physically assaulted one of our staff members working in our sewerage section, while our team was working in Zengeza 1.

“This kind of behaviour is wayward. As a municipality we condemn it in every way as it dehumanizes professionals when they get attacked during broad day light by some hoodlums under the auspices of politics. As Chitungwiza Municipality, we do not condone the use of violence as a way of solving service delivery problems.

“We therefore, call for order from the perpetrators of the violence since their behavior has disturbed our operations. The sewerage team, which was supposed to return on Saturday to finish the work that they failed to complete the previous day because of the disturbances, has since failed to finish work for fear of further harassment, assault and intimidation. This barbaric behavior has not resolved anything till now; the problem that was supposed to be attended to remains unresolved; the sewerage is still overflowing.”

Efforts to get a comment from Mlambo on the matter were fruitless as he was not picking up his mobile phone.
