The Women’s Coalition of Zimbabwe is calling for the appointment of a female Vice President to fill in the vacant post following the resignation of VP Kembo Mohadi on Monday.

The country last had a female VP in 2014 when opposition leader for National People’s Party, Joice Mujuru was still under Zanu PF during the reign of the late President Robert Mugabe.

Mujuru was sworn in as the first VP of the country in 2004. The President is being called to consider a woman for the post in a press statement released yesterday by WCOZ.

“Cognizant of this opportune time, we urge the President, His Excellency, E.D Mnangagwa to exercise his powers to appoint a female Vice President, in a manner that demonstrates his often stated commitment to equality in appointments and electoral representation. We further plead with the President to rectify the constitutional gender imbalance which currently exists in the Presidium and which has threatened any gender equality gains that had been made in terms of parity in political representation.
