Presidential spokesperson, George Charamba has received a barrage of backlash over racial slurs against members of the Young Lawyers Association of Zimbabwe.

This comes after the young lawyers lodged a court application challenging the extension of Chief Justice Malaba’s term by President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Charamba (@Jamwanda) in a series of derogatory remarks aimed at lawyer, Douglas Coltart and Emma Drury wrote, “THINK ABOUT THIS ZIMBABWE: Imagine David COLTART or David Drury bringing a lawsuit against then Chief Justice Gubbay for inviting white farmers to bring cases against expropriation of Zimbabwean Land occupied by white Rhodesians then? Just imagine a sitting WHITE Chief Justice”

Responding to Charamba, MDC Alliance spokesperson Fadzai Mahere tweeted “It’s a matter of regret & national embarrassment that a whole supposed “presidential spokesperson”, a civil servant paid by our taxes, would spew out such racist, hate speech. I always say – ethical leadership matters. Zimbabwe deserves better than this.We need new leaders.🇿🇼 “

Prominent journalist, Hopewell Chin’ono said, “This is President Mnangagwa’s spokesman George Charamba using his Twitter handle @jamwanda2 to spew racist bile against young white Zimbabweans; And Kirsty Coventry the Youth Minister thinks it is ok to stay in such a regime?
ZANUPF has really sunk low, and Mnangagwa’s presidency has gone from the gutter into the sewer! I

Young Zimbabweans of all races must register to vote to put an end to this nightmare!”.

The Young Lawyers Association of Zimbabwe said that they are committed to secure a future for the younger generation and called on an end to the attack on the legal profession .

“We, as young lawyers, are determined to secure a future in which we can do our work without fear, favour or intimidation”.

Speaking to Bustop TV News, political analyst, Frank Chauke said it is wrong for a presidential spokesperson to spit venomous tweets that divide the nation on racial grounds.

“It’s appalling. It’s wrong for Charamba to insult others based on their race. While its his freedom to vent his frustrations, it’s wrong to pass racial statements. He is a senior civil servant, who has been in government for some time now. While past misdeeds against the white colonial regime must be condemned, it was through Independence that the country decided to bury the hatchet and move forward as one country”.
