Masvingo – MDC Alliance has condemned the detention of their National Youth Organiser, Godfrey Kurauone at the Masvingo Remand Prison.

Kurauone was denied bail last week after he was charged with undermining the President Emmerson Mnangagwa two weeks ago.

Mtombeni whom he was arrested together with for the same crime, was granted $1000RTGs bail and was released from the remand prison but Kurauone was denied bail said Human Rights Lawyer, Advocate Martin Mureri.

The MDC Alliance Youth Assembly National Spokesperson, Stephen Sarkozy Chuma described his detention as ‘illegal’.

“Kurauone must never continue to be illegally detained for refusing to obey the Command Fasting from an illegitimate President whose hands drip with blood of 1August 2018 victims. As MDC Alliance Youth Assembly, we want to make it clear that we are all Kurauone,” he said.

The MDC claimed that Kurauone was being ill-treated in the prison.

“Disturbing reports we are receiving is that Cllr Kurauone is being denied access to food and warm clothing and this is a clear disrespect and violation of rights of detained persons as enshrined in the Constitution. It is also very clear that Mnangagwas panic stricken illegal regime is illegally locking up Kurauone as a means to strike fear on citizens ahead of 31July protests,” reads the statement.

He added that as an assembly, prison walls will not deter them from taking the President heads on.

“Let it be known that the continued illegal detention of our youth organiser is going to cause fury and wrath on the corrupt tendencies of Emmerson Mnangagwas illegitimate regime. Proper candidates for indefinite remand and jail are Mnangwagwas clansmen like his cousin Obadiah Moyo who looted Covid -19 funds yet he is walking scot free,” he said.

The youth assembly said they are going to organise and mobilise to demand his immediate release.
