Leading opposition party, MDC Alliance has remained resolute that it’s Hurungwe central ward 4 councillor Lavender Chiwaya was murdered by suspected state security agents.

This follows a statement from the Zimbabwe Republic Police stating that Chiwaya died after consuming illicit beverage.

The MDC Alliance confronted Information ministry permanent secretary, Nick Mangwana on Twitter for providing “inaccurate information.”

“The state in a clear attempt to cover up the murder of Cllr Chiwaya is taking too long to carry out a simple postmortem & is resorting to personal attacks. The state should come out clean on Cllr Chiwaya’s postmoterm. #ZimbabweanLivesMatter @advocatemahere @BrianRupiya @uk_mdca.”

Nick Mangwana had posted about the death of Chiwaya claiming that the opposition will politicize Chiwaya’s death.

Mangwana tweeted, “When Trinos Chinyoka died in July after falling into an uncovered disused mine shaft. The party rushed to proclaim to the world that he had been murdered by State agents. Now MDC Hurungwe Ward 4 councillor Lavender Chiwaya dies, they go international”

MDC Alliance spokesperson, Fadzai Mahere responded to him in a series of tweets.

“Stop deviating from the matter at hand. What happened to #LovenderChiwaya? We demand justice for him and his family. His life mattered. We demand an independent, genuine investigation into the circumstances of his death. No cover ups. No sideshows. #ZimbabweanLivesMatter,” she said.

She added, “We are demanding justice for one of our members who died under the strangest of circumstances. They’re currently standing in the way of a postmortem being conducted. Stop the sideshows. This is not the Zimbabwe we want, @nickmangwana. #JusticeForLovender #ZimbabweanLivesMatter.”

Meanwhile, the police have released a statement dismissing the murder claims and suggesting that he was taking “kranco.”

The statement said, “The facts are that Lavenda Chiwaya and Munyaradzi Pasipamire approached Tinashe Kanhema who was roasting and selling maize cobs at 1930 hours o. 20 August 2020. The duo was given a roasted maize cob to share and went to buy 2 x 200 ml Challenger whisky (kranco) which they again shared. At about 2030 hours, Lavenda Chiwaya left his two colleagues after telling them that he was going home. The body of Lavenda Chiwaya, was later found at number 1179 Chikangwe, Karoi.”

The police said that there were no struggle marks observed and that the said abductions are fabrications.

The police said, “No struggle marks were observed by police besides the valuables which were retrieved from his body. The police are not aware of the alleged abductions or kidnapping as alluded to by some individuals and groups on social media. Full scale investigations are in progress to find exactly what happened.”

The police further warned politicians against making premature statements before investigations are conducted.

“We appeal to politicians to avoid making premature statements and to allow investigations to process smoothly. Politicians should be careful in their comments as there are allegations of girlfriends and alcohol abuse issues which are now subject to police investigations in this case,” said the police.
