Matebeleland South defying lockdown regulations: Government

Government has said Matebeleland South province residents are not adhering to the Covid-19 regulations.

Speaking at a post cabinet briefing, Tuesday, Information Minister, Monica Mutsvangwa said citizens from Matebeleland South were disregarding Covid-19 guidelines and attending funeral gatherings.

“It has been observed that some provinces such as Matabeleland South are not adhering to COVID-19 regulations at funerals, resulting in unnecessary discord between Environmental Health Workers and the local leadership regarding issues of opening of coffins and body viewing,” she said.

Meanwhile, MDC-T Matebeleland South legislator, Sipho Mokone quizzed the accuracy of the findings which government had based its information.

“Whilst it is a welcome move for the cabinet to furnish us with adherence statistics, I think we would like to know the accuracy of the findings as regards to Matebeleland South being singled out as a non adherence province.

“If that information is accurate,then may the government kindly give us solutions as to what they are doing in order to arrest the situation to annihilate the third wave because of major cities in Mat South province particularly Beitbridge town which is the main entrance from South Africa,” she said.

Mokone went on to bemoan the water crisis in Gwanda town amid the deadly coronavirus pandemic.

“Gwanda town is the provincial capital of the province but it plagued with a serious water crisis in this Covid era. Water is a neccesity in this pandemic era, may the government provide us with solutions.”

As at 31 May, 2021, a total of 675 678 people had received their first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine and 344 400 are fully vaccinated the country.

A total of 38 961 Covid-19 cumulative confirmed cases have been recorded, with 36 594 recoveries, 1 594 deaths and 771 active cases.
