Mamombe, Chimbiri granted $20 000 bail

MDC Alliance Harare West Legislator, Joana Mamombe and activist Cecilia Chimbiri have been granted RTGS$20 000 bail each with ‘strict conditions’.

The duo had been detained for 2 months now after they were arrested earlier in March for allegedly contravening lockdown regulations after addressing the media at the Magistrates court.

In handing down their ruling, Justice Chitapi said the duo’s conduct had stretched the court’s patience.

“It remains a fact that their conduct stretches the court’s patience. As such bail will be granted in strict conditions.”

He further added that as part of their bail conditions they were not allowed to adress gatherings of more than fifty people.


“The appeal hereby succeeds and the decision by the magistrate is set aside and substituted by the following; that the appellants deposit $20 000 bail each, continue to reside at their given addresses, not to interfere with witnesses, and are also barred from addressing a gathering exceeding 50 people or engaging in any conduct which is in violation of Covid-19 regulations,” Chitapi said.
