Masvingo – The state in has failed to avail witness documents required for the prosecution of MDC Alliance National organising secretary and Masvingo ward 4 Councillor, Godfrey Kurauone.

Kurauone is currently detained at Mutimurefu Prison.

No witnesses have been recorded for the case since his arrest on the 31st of July 2020.

The state last week asked for the postponement of his case stating that they did not have the authority to prosecute the case and had to ask for powers from the prosecutors general.

Yesterday he faced trial for criminal nuisance and obstruction of endangering free movement of traffic and people.

Advocate Martin Mureri who is representing him said yesterday was the day the cases were supposed to be given the trial date.

“For the two cases, today is the day we had agreed to set and give the trail date but when we came it shows that the witness statements have not been recorded, so the state did talk to the police and it shows the police are available to record those statements.

What amuses me is that, the first witness statement and of the police who is involved in the matter was taken on the 31st of July 2020 and is a police officer but up to now they have not managed to record a statement on their core worker,” he said.

Mureri has called upon the police to present it’s case adding that delay in producing the witnesses shows that no crime was committed.

“There is no evidence at all, it is just a game plan to jus arrest people, they are failing to provide credible witnesses and to even record their statements. They just want him to pay for a crime he did not commit,” said Mureri.
