Masvingo – MDC Alliance national youth organiser, Godfrey Kurauone who is currently in prison has been reported to be critically ill.

Kurauone who is also Masvingo Urban ward four councillor is being charged with two counts, inciting violence and engaging in illegal demonstrations.

He is still in police custody after he was denied bail last week. According to his lawyer, Martin Mureri his High Court bail hearing is due tomorrow, Wednesday.

“Reports from Masvingo Remand Prison indicate that jailed Kurauone is in a very unstable health condition. Our organiser is being denied access to proper medication and healthy food in contravention of the Prisons Act,” said the MDC Alliance Youth Assembly spokesperson, Stephen Chuma.

Chuma claimed Kurauone was a target of political persecution.

“It is very clear that Kurauone is a target of persecution by the state because he refused to yield to Emmerson Mnangagwas call for command fasting and went on a campaign to feed the underprivileged.

Just like the Ian Smith regime, ED’s government now uses detention as a tool to silence critics as we have witnessed in the case of Hopewell Chin’ono and Jacob Ngarivhume who are languishing Chikurubi Maximum Prison for speaking out against corruption,” he said.

The opposition party youth assembly said that they will not bow down to anyone’s command but will continue fighting.

“We want to make it clear that we are not going to be cowed into submission but will continue to raise our voices against societal ills like corruption,” Chuma said.

Kurauone is denying the charges that are being laid against him.
