A manager at a Murehwa-based abbatoir, PHI, which is a subsidiary of Innscor, dragged a worker at the abbatoir to court over allegations of stealing a kitten.

According to some workers at the abattoir, the accused, Archford Manyuka, took care of  a stray kitten which he didn’t know belonged to his superior.

After having found that he was missing his kitten, the manager identified as Jobson   instituted a search at the farm and was led to the accused’s home where he recovered the kitten.

However, he surprised many when he decided to press charges of theft on the farm worker in a move most have described as purely personal.

“It has been one of the craziest week, when we told murungu (manager) that his stray kitten had been taken custody of by  Archford, we thought he was going to thank him.

” We were baffled to hear that he is taking Archford to court and I think the arrest is purely bordered on settling personal scores,” said the worker who requested anonymity.

He has since been charged and made to pay a fine of ZWL$ 30 000.

Commenting on the saga,  , Progressive Agriculture and Allied Industries  Workers Union of Zimbabwe, (PAAWUZ), general secretary, Phillip Mafundu says the allegations are absurd and are mearnt to cow workers into submission.

“It looks like  have been taken back to the colonial era the welfare of animals was supreme than black workers’ rights.”This is absurd that a worker who did safe keep a stray  kitten  is arrested for theft and this is  only mearnt  to intimidate workers,” said Mafundu who vowed to keep fighting farm workers’ rights.
