Govt urges citizens to practice extreme caution amid Covid-19 third wave

Government has urged citizens to continue observing Covid-19 protocols in order to prevent a further spike in infections amid the corona virus third wave.

Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services minister, Monica Mutsvangwa told the media during the 26th post cabinet briefing on Tuesday.

“The nation is called upon to continue exercising extreme caution and complying with Covid-19 protective and preventive measures in order to register further declines in confirmed Covid-19 cases.”

This comes after cabinet received an update from the Acting Chairperson on the Ad-Hoc Inter Ministerial Taskforce on Covid-19, Amon Murwira.

The update indicates that there was a slight decrease in weekly cases from 14 275 during the ending on 27 July 2021 to 11 652 in the week ending on 2 August 2021.

According to government, the decrease in recorded cases is due to strict prevention measures put in place in response to the outbreak of the third wave and new variants.

As at 2 August 2021, Covid-19 cases stood at 110 855, with 79 420 recoveries and 3 635 deaths.

Meanwhile, the recovery rate stands at 72% while the number of active cases stands at 27 800.

Areas that recorded highest numbers of news cases are Harare Metropolitan Province (2 361), Mashonaland East Province (1 523), Mashonaland West Province (1 136), Manicaland Province (1 361) and Masvingo Province (1 106).
