The joy of the resumption of live music shows has been short lived after the tightening of Covid 19 lockdown measures by government.

Vice President and Minister of Health and Child Welfare, Constantino Chiwenga addressing the media on Saturday said all gatherings were banned in an effort to curb the spread of Covid-19.

In the past days Covid-19 cases recorded daily have spiked.

“The country is facing a surge in cases as compared to this period last year, the past 7 days the country has seen 596 new cases and 26 deaths as compared to last year where there were 132 cases and 6 deaths. This is more than 4 fold increase in new cases and deaths.

“It has been noted that there has been a general complacency in adhering to the preventative measures in communities and workplaces. We are also witnessing a sharp increase in cases and deaths globally and regionally, in order to curb this surge in Zimbabwe and prevent a potential third wave, these measures will be implemented effective Monday 14 June 2021,” he said.

There will be stricter enforcement on mandatory wearing of masks and maintaining social distance in public spaces.

Public transport operators have been urged to follow Covid-19 protocols.

“Public transport should ensure that all passengers are wearing their masks properly, temperature should be checked and hands sanitized. At the same tie the vehicles should be disinfected after every trip.

“All gatherings are banned, these include but not limited to weddings, church gatherings, music festivals and sport activities. Funerals shall be limited to 30 people, all Covid funerals to be supervised by health personnel.

“All workshops and meetings are to be held virtually. All offices, government and private are to decongest by 50% except offices connected to essential services,” Chiwenga said.

Market places will close at 1800 hours and failure to comply will result in closure and withdrawal of business licenses.
