The MDC Alliance Women’s Assembly has slammed government for collapsing the social welfare system and neglecting widows.
MDC Alliance Assembly of Women spokesperson, Barbara Tanyanyiwa in a statement commemorating International Widows Day said relief aid would go a long way in assisting widows.
The day is observed annually on the 23rd of June aimed at raising awareness of poverty and injustice faced by widows and orphans globally.
“In Zimbabwe, the government has failed to take care of widows as the social welfare system has totally collapsed. We believe empowering widows is the only solution to their endless problems.”
Tanyanyiwa added that several widows now rely on informal trading and their livelihoods had been threatened by government’s demolition of illegal structures.
The partys IWD commemorations were held in Manicaland and led by Macharairwa Mughido, the Assembly of Women chairperson.
This year’s IWD was run under the theme ‘Invisible women, Invisible problems’ and this was the 11th edition of the annual event since its initiation by the United Nation (UN) in 2010.
