HARARE– The Zimbabwe Peace Project has called upon government to play its role in ensuring citizens political, economic and social rights are uplifted.
The human rights lobby group in its August monthly monitoring report said government must always prioritize citizens welfare. ZPP added that the biggest threat to socio-economic rights of people was the economy which is fast deteriorating.

“Government should prioritize fixing the economy as it has become the biggest threat to people’s socio-economic rights. An inclusive approach should be followed to ensure that everyone contributes to making decisions about the economy. In addition; separation of powers should be implemented.

“Government should prioritize its workers and accord them a living wage as failure to do so impacts on the fundamental rights to health and education. Government should also look into the plight of the people in the informal sector, persons with disabilities and ensure they get adequate social support,” part of the report reads.

The latest report also noted that the right to freedom of expression has been thwarted in a number of cases.
“Arbitrary arrests should stop, and government should respect the people’s rights to assemble, petition and associate, and should not interfere in such. More importantly and democracy thrives on a nation that enjoys freedom.
In the interests of the public and interests of its own credibility, government should conduct itself in a transparent manner when investigating cases like the abduction of the three MDC youth leaders and other related cases, victims are not able to tell their side of the story,” ZPP stated.

ZPP also added that those who break the law must be brought to book regardless of their status.
