Government licenses more Community Radio Stations

GOVERNMENT through the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services and the Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe (BAZ) has awarded licenses to three more Community Radio and Campus Radio stations.


BAZ confirmed the new development in a statement they posted on their official Twitter page.


“The Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe would like to announce that it has licensed three (3) more Community  Radio Stations. The licenses have been issued to the following applicant,” reads the BAZ statement.

Below is a list of the licensed community radio stations:
(1) Beitbridge and Shashe Community Radio Station Broadcasting Association, its coverage will be Beitbridge and Shashe.

(2) Chiredzi Rural Communities Development Initiative Trust Trading as Avuxeni FM its coverage will be Chikombedzi, Chiredzi, Rutenga,Malipati and Mahenye.

(3) Lyeja-Nyayi Development Trust covering Hwange and Victoria Falls.


While the three campus radio stations are as follows:
1. National University of Science and Technology.

2. Lupane State University.

3. Harare Polytechnic College.


The three community radios stations and three campus radio stations become the second batch of radio stations to be officially authorized to operate in Zimbabwe since 1980.


The first authorized batch had Ntepe-Manama Community Radio Trust, Nyangani Community Radio Trust and Mbembesi Development trust who were granted their operating licenses in December 2020.


Government promised that a total of ten community radios shall be licensed in the country and with six licensed four remain.
