Government Dismisses New Currency Claims

Government has dismissed claims that it is considering to introduce a new currency, cryptocurrency in circulation.

This follows reports that government was poised to introduce cryptocurrency inorder to the compliment the local currency and other forms of payments.

However speaking at a post cabinet media briefing yesterday, Minister of Information Publicity and and Broadcasting Services Senator Monica Mutsvangwa reassured the nation that it is sticking to the local ZW$.

“Government would like to assure the nation that it is not considering introducing another currency in the economy as reported in some sections of the media.

“Our local currency is the Zimbabwe dollar (ZW$) and not cryptocurrency,” she said.

She however admitted that that the government was studying the digital currency but was not considering cryptocurrency.

“Like most countries in the world, Government of Zimbabwe through its Financial Technology (FINTECH) Group, is studying Central Banking Digital Currency (CBDC) as opposed to cryptocurrencies, bitcoins or any form of derivatives,” she added.
