Female Rugby Club, FS Raiders and Bulawayo based Milton Boys High School dominated the first day of the Victoria Falls Sevens Rugby tournament by amassing the most points in their respective divisions.
FS Raiders put up an impressive performance as they only conceded one try throughout the day whilst Milton put up a similar fate except for the fact that their margin was lower than those of Raiders.
Raiders assistant coach Prosper Mubaiwa said that he was elated at his side’s performances although he felt that a lot still had to be done.
“We came to play and we are doing just that. We are impressed with performances and progress of the girls considering the bulk of the team is 16 years of age and they are schoolgirls.”
The school girls who are part of FS Raiders team touring in the Victoria Falls tournament include, Sharon Moyo, Lydia Chinyani, Kuzivakwashe Gonangombe, Maxine Mufambisi, Tsungirirai Dzotizei and Kudzai Matematema.
Raider fly half, Taren Munodani, was on top form as she was passing and scoring tries for fun.
Other players who were superb are Cynthia Maungwa, Hazel Njaya and Erika Mack.
From the Milton bench, Coach Themba Phiri said that he was happy that his troupes played to his instructions and was hoping to play in the finals.
“My boys managed to play according to instructions and they did very well on the pitch. I set targets for them and they did just as I expected so I am happy. I hope to play in the finals and that will be good for us.”
Milton recently won the Umdala Wethu sevens tournament held in Bulawayo last week and are hoping to make it a brace in a fortnight.
Meanwhile, Allan Wilson Sables started on a low as they lost one of their first two encounters. They were outdone by some dubious calls that could have ruined the boys’ eagerness to play the game.
