Masvingo – Climate Change Scientist, Tatenda Mutasa has urged local farmers to adjust and use Smart Climate Agriculture.

Climate change has greatly negatively affected yields and resulted in farmers incurring losses.

In an interview with Bustop TV, Mutasa said seasons are changing and lesser harvests are now leading to droughts.

“Climate change has caused poverty in the society, not only in Zimbabwe but it is a worldwide problem. We are encouraging people to adapt to climate change and we are now encouraging Smart Climate Agriculture. With Smart Climate Agriculture, we encourage people to plant small grin crops that easily adapt to the changing weather patterns. We should build resilience and this is the only way we can have more yields,” he said.

He added that farmers should not rely on only one source of income.

“We encourage people not to rely on farming only but to also look around for other opportunities that come around them that can make them sustain a living especially when cases like these rise. People are not being discouraged from doing farming but being encouraged to have other alternatives,” said Mutasa.

Mutasa said people are still ill informed about climate change and as such have to be educated on the topic and how it affects them.
Climate change scientists are setting up meetings with farmers and providing them with information through various programs.

Meanwhile more funds are being sourced which will be availed to the agriculture sector.
