Masvingo – The Sayana press is considered to be the most favorable but is only accessible to people living in the urban areas, Zimbabwe National Family Planning Council (ZNFPC) revealed.

The new contraceptive is a Long-Acting Reversible Contraceptive (LARC) injection that gives 13weeks of effective contraception but is only accessible at ZNFPC and PSI New Start Centre.

In an interview with the ZNFPC, Provincial Marketing and Communications Officer Herbert Chikosi said the biggest challenge on the uptake of the Sayana Press is that the contraceptive is accessible to those in the urban areas.

“We cannot say the uptake of the contraceptive is low, generally we are getting there but the biggest challenge is that individuals are comfortable to get a service which is found everywhere so our clientele is now the middle class around town only. So basically that is the challenge we have. Unlike in Mash East, mat north, Bulawayo and mat south where they are getting it at a larger scale. The unfortunate thing about Masvingo is that we have two centres providing the services,” he said.

He added that they are making efforts to make sure that the new contraceptive becomes favorable to everyone.

“We are making efforts for it to be known out there, we hold what we call Wednesday free, where we offer free services every month, we look for a service we can offer for free to make people familiar with it. So then we offer that service for free for all as a way of making sure people are familiar with it,” Chikosi said.

Chikosi indicated that the Sayana press is also being offered for free for people below 18 years to make sure these ages are catered for. The idea of free for U18 is to make sure that family planning methods are for all.

To the users it has proven that it has less side effects, the new method was introduced to make sure that women have a variety of choices when it comes to choosing contraceptives.
