Former Tottenham Hotspur and Portsmouth manager, Harry Redknapp, has revealed how retired Zimbabwean international striker, Benjani Mwaruwari, feared to take on his move from Portsmouth to Man City on the transfere deadline day.

Speaking on BT sports, the English manager (Redknapp) described how he ultimately forced Benjani to acquire the City move.

“I told him Man City want you, that was on the transfere deadline day. I took the striker to the airport, left him there at the airport, his getting on the plan and I drive back.

“I got a call from Man City, telling me he hadn’t arrived, told them I left him at the airport.

“I phoned Benji, where are you? and he replied I’m still at the airport, drived back to the airport, with only one plan left. Forced him through the door.

“He arrived at the City ground at 12 O’Clock (Midnight), almost time up for the transfere deadline day,” he said.

However, the 2008 FA Cup winner with Portsmouth, also disclosed that Mwaruwari was a great player, though, he was not worth £9.5million pounds.

“I loved Benji he runned ,worked hard and was good player but knowing nine and a half million pounds was a lot of money for Benjie, I told him Man City want you,” revealed Redknapp.

To add on, during his stint at the Blues, the 42 year old soccer star secured a winning goal for City, through a header to give his new employers first victory at Old Trafford after over three decades.

Meanwhile, the former Warriors captain is now back at Pompey on a coaching role.

He is reportedly working as an academy assistant coach, as part of practical experience towards his UEFA A license, and is currently working with Pompey’s under 16 team.
