Chamisa’s MDC Alliance and the Khupe led, MDC T will face off as they battle to replace Harare mayor, Herbert Gomba.

The rivals have selected different candidates who are set to contest for the post.

Gomba was recalled by the MDC T from council and his post as Glen Norah Ward 27 councillor.

He is also facing corruption charges and is currently out on bail.

MDC Alliance has reportedly nominated councillor and lawyer, Jacob Mafume while the MDC T selected businessman, Luckson Mukunguma.

An MDC Alliance official privy to the discussions said the alliance’s candidate will most likely get the post as they have more councillors.

“MDC Alliance has the majority of councillors in the Harare City chambers, and anyone nominated from Khupe’s MDC-T will not be elected. The party leadership has settled for Jacob Mafume who was formerly with PDP (People’s Democratic Party) and Khupe cannot recall him.”

Meanwhile, in Bindura the MDC-T is set to recall the city’s mayor and 8 councillors for rallying behind the MDC Alliance.

A letter obtained by this reporter, written by the MDC-T’s Mashonaland Central’s provincial executive has recommended the recalling of the Mayor of Bindura, Carlos Tokyo and eight other councillors for failing to respect the party’s leadership.

“We hope you will urgently execute this exercise as a matter of urgency and within the earliest possible time. Further delays will greatly disadvantage the MDC-T party.” reads part of the letter.

However, the recalls by the MDC-T have attracted criticism from various residents associations across the country accusing the MDC-T leadership of falling to respect the electorate.
