While most people are seemingly losing interest in formal adverts and the same struggling to get internet bundles to access the necessary information to drive social change, trendy Zim-dancehall music has proved useful in information dissemination.

To this effect, Bustop TV has released a reggae/ dancehall mixtape aimed at bringing awareness to the COVID 19 pandemic which has ravaged the world.

Bustop TV projects manager, Derick Nyizakwi highlighted that they chose the Zimdancehall music genre due to its popularity with contemporary music lovers.

“Zimdancehall has a huge following in the ghettos and even in rural setups and we have realised that this genre has a huge following. We have then put in messages on COVID 19 awareness so that people get to know where to access information as indicated if one listens to the mixtape. Like we said people must get reliable information on the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Ministry of Health and Child Care websites. We did our advertising on the mixtape deliberately. We knew that if we can speak in between the music people love to listen to music and in the process, our message could be heard.

“Music is a huge tool towards information dissemination, in churches and even at funerals music is used in-between the dissemination messages. Is has been proven that music can be used in many instances to convey messages”.

He also explained the concept used in making the mixtape and why they roped in popular radio DJ Abisha Palmer on the mixtape.

“We worked with Abisha Palmer because he has a huge following among the youths and is familiar with the youths. European Union gave us financial support for the project and we are grateful to them,” added Nziyakwi.

Playing for close to an hour, the mixtape carries music from various artists as well as infomercials which are voiced by popular Bustop TV characters, Samantha ‘Gonyeti’ Kureya, Sharon ‘Maggie’ Chideu and Derick Nyizakwi.

The unmistakable voice of Abisha Palmer guides the music and infomercials in a work of brilliance. The mixtape is expected to be circulated via flash disks as well as various social media platforms.
