Bosso legend Ernest ‘Maphepha’ Sibanda dies

Ex Highlanders FC chairman, manager and player Ernest “Maphepha” Sibanda has died.

He was aged 64.

Maphepha died at Mater Dei private hospital in Bulawayo Tuesday morning where he has been hospitalised for one week.

The cause of his death yet to be known.

He has not been well over a long period of time and sources close indicate that he was battling diabetes.

Highlanders Football Club confirmed this on their Twitter account.
The club said, “It’s a Dark day for the club. A dark day for Zimbabwean Football. Former Player, Manager and Chairman Ernest ‘Maphepha’ Sibanda has died. Rest In Peace Legend.”

Former Highlander’ players expressed their grief and sent through their condolence messages via various social media platforms.

“Rest Easy Topi, you will be forever in my memories. Thank you for the Life lessons. Lala ngokuthula Mdawini,” Mkokheli Dube wrote on Facebook.

“Rest in Peace our Hero, you will forever be missed,” Mgcini Mhlophe.


Funeral arrangements will be announced.

Maphepha’s death comes two days after Zimbabwe’s football fraternity was plunged into mourning following the death of Caps Untied legend Joe “Kode” Mugabe.

The 53-year-old Makepekepe legend, Joe Kode Mugabe succumbed to cancer at the UK on Sunday.
