Opposition activist, and former Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU) Secretary General Makomborero Haruzivishe was Tuesday slapped with 24 months imprisonment by Harare magistrate, Judith Taruvinga.

He however had 10 months suspended which will see him serve an effective 14 months behind bars.

Haruzivishe was convicted last week Wednesday 31 March 2021 on charges of inciting public violence, and resisting arrest charges which he denied.

Haruzivishe was reportedly arrested in a movie style by armed men who initially intended to take him to some place before he raised alarm prompting the gang to drop him off at Harare Central police.

It is reported that they took the accused person with their unmarked vehicles and drove towards Chitungwiza.

According to his lawyer Obey Shava, Haruzivishe saved himself by screaming that he was being kidnapped after he saw people.

“Only then did the arresting suspects make a u-turn and dropped him at Harare Central Police Station,” he said.

Confirming Haruzivishe’s arrest via their twitter handle, MDC Alliance has identified the young activist’s sentencing as a sign of political persecution to silence would be activists from speaking against the current regime.

In a devastating turn of events, Mako has been sentenced to an effective 14 months in prison. This is a clear example of political persecution,” read the tweet.
