Rwanda Defends National Security Amid UK Sanctions Over DRC War

The Rwandan government has strongly opposed the United Kingdom’s recent decision to impose sanctions over allegations of Kigali’s involvement in the conflict in the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Rwanda faces accusations of backing the M23 rebel group, which has taken control of significant parts of eastern DRC, including the cities of Goma and Bukavu, along with resource-rich areas.

On Tuesday, February 25, the UK announced a suspension of some bilateral aid to Rwanda and the implementation of diplomatic sanctions against the country.

In response, Rwanda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation issued a statement expressing disappointment, criticizing the UK for taking sides in the conflict. The ministry described the decision as unfair and insisted that Rwanda would not jeopardize its national security or the well-being of its citizens.

Furthermore, the Rwandan government argued that these measures would not contribute to resolving the crisis in the DRC or foster a sustainable political solution in the region.

Rwanda maintains that it has no ties to M23, asserting that its military actions are solely aimed at defending against hostile forces operating from the DRC.

In its official statement, the Rwandan government accused the DRC of ongoing human rights violations, including attacks on civilians, particularly the Banyamulenge community in South Kivu. It also criticized the international community for failing to hold the DRC accountable, which it claims has only prolonged the conflict.

Rwanda reaffirmed its commitment to working with African-led mediation efforts and urged global partners to support diplomatic initiatives as the most viable path to peace in eastern DRC.
