Zimbabwe To Chair The International Renewable Energy Agency

Ministry of Energy and Power Development permanent secretary, Gloria Magombo has been appointed to represent Zimbabwe as the Deputy Chair of International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).

Addressing the media at a briefing, on Tuesday, Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Monica Mutsvangwa said Zimbabwe was elected to deputy chair the agency.

“Cabinet is delighted to announce that Zimbabwe was elected to the International Renewable Energy Agency as Deputy Chair.  The country will be represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Energy and Power Development, Dr. Eng. Gloria Magombo.  The Agency is chaired by Japan”.

According to IRENA two committees, Programme and strategic committee and the Administration and Finance Committee currently assist the council in its programmatic work, where Samoa stands as the Chair of the Programme and strategic committee , Zimbabwe, Ukraine, Sudan, New Zealand, Netherlands, Islamic Republic of Iran, Germany, France and Dominican republic.

21 countries serve on the council on a two year term: Algeria, Benin, Colombia, Denmark, El Salvador, Germany, India, Japan, Kenya, Norway, Republic of Korea, Saint Lucia, Somalia, Switzerland, Turkey, Turkmenistan, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom of Great Britain, Northern Ireland, United States of America, Vanuatu, and Zimbabwe. The following act as alternates Canada, China, Cyprus, Dominican Republic, Egypt, Italy, Nigeria, Tuvalu and Uruguay.

IRENA is an intergovernmental organization that supports countries in their transition to a sustainable energy future and serves as the principal platform for international cooperation, a centre of excellence and a repository of policy, technology, resource and financial knowledge on renewable energy.

It promotes the widespread adoption and sustainable use of renewable energy, including bio-energy, geothermal, hydropower, ocean, solar and wind energy in the pursuit of sustainable development, energy access, energy security and low carbon economic growth and prosperity.
