Police today forcefully disrupted a crowd that was gathered outside the Rotten Row magistrate court in solidarity with detained Zengeza West legislator, Job Sikhala.

The outspoken MDC Alliance Vice Chairperson Sikhala was arrested last Friday facing charges of inciting public violence.

He appeared before Harare Magistrate Lazini Ncube.

Three people were reportedly arrested whilst others fled the scene when a truckload full of anti-riot police arrived at the court.

Videos and pictures of police pouncing on Sikhala’s supporters have since gone viral on social media platforms with comments from internet users registering their displeasure at the use of brutal force on civilians.

Sikhala through his lawyer, Harrison Nkomo said he had received death threats from prison authorities and asked to be detained at any other prison which is not Chikurubi Maximum Prison for the sake of his safety.

He added that he had no access to sanitizers and PPEs despite that several of his inmates had tested positive for Covid-19.

During the court session, it was revealed that Sikhala is being kept in Section D which is reserved for condemned prisoners. The court was told that the section has also seen a number of deaths due to Covid-19.

His trial was postponed to tomorrow, Tuesday.
