There were reports of violence between two rival students’ representative groups following disputed results of the Students Representative Council (SRC) Elections at University of Zimbabwe last night.
According to reports, the Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU) won the elections; defeating ZANU PF backed students union ZICOSU (Zimbabwe Congress of Students Union).
The defeat did not go well as youths aligned to the ZANU PF Union who allegedly unleashed violence on other students and UZ security leading to the deployment of riot Police at the Campus.

Speaking to this publication ZINASU Secretary-General Ashely Pfunye blamed their erstwhile rivals for instigating the violence after they had realized that they had lost the elections.
Soon after the elections ended, the ZICOSU cabal together with visible ZANU PF thug’s started to cause chaos at UZ because they knew ZINASU had won the elections.

Former UZ SRC member from ZICOSU Lonias Majoni, however, has a different tale of the incident.
“What happened is that there were two hostile groups (ZINASU AND ZICOSU) converged at a car park awaiting results.
“A missile was thrown in the midst of nowhere that’s when the fight broke, l didn’t see much as I was busy discussing with senior security officers,” narrated Majoni

ZINASU candidate Albion Mataranyika was pronounced the winner with 2 5 11 votes followed by Wilbert Muzaruwetu ZICOSU who had 1170 votes.
Meanwhile, ZICOSU has since filed papers challenging the outcome of the elections.
