Masvingo – Women’s Coalition of Zimbabwe (WCOZ) has called on the media to tackle issues affecting women in their day to day lives.

The Masvingo Province WCOZ chapter Advocate Belinda Mwale said there is a gap within the media when it comes to reporting on women issues.

Mwale said this during a meeting conducted on Friday.

“The media is the voice of the voiceless and us as women we have to work along with them, women should be ready to open up about the issues that affect their daily lives and not live in a private sphere. If women do not air out their views, no one will be able to know the issues that are affecting them.

As women together, let us fight against gender inequalities, information is power above everything,” said Mwale.

Mwale said as a women’s lobby group they will continue to engage the media to bring a difference in women’s lives.

“Women issues are not being heard out there because the editorial policy sets an agenda hence the real issue at hand is rubbed away. Stories end up being diverted from their original input. Issues should be published as they are so that the real issues that are affecting women gain multitude,” she said.

Theresa Takafuma a journalist present at the meeting said women must be encouraged to work together and participate in the public sphere. She added that if women do not speak up, their challenges will not be taken account into.
