BULAWAYO – Opposition MDC Alliance chairperson Thabitha Khumalo is still hospitalised with stab wounds after a vicious attack by unknown assailants who broke into her house in Saurcetown, Bulawayo, early Saturday.

The former Bulawayo East lawmaker said she was home alone around 4AM  when two men attacked her with a knobkerrie and a knife demanding to know “where is Thabitha Khumalo”, leaving her for dead.

Her attackers made off with some valuables, including a laptop, three cellphones, and a 64-inch television set, Khumalo told reporters from her hospital bed where she was said to be in “severe pain” but stable.

“They started beating me up and ordered me to tell Honourable Khumalo to stop moving all over the show and be quiet,” she told a local news website, adding she suspected the attack was political.

“They struck me on my head first, hammered my knees and one of them took a knife and aimed for my head. I instantly raised my hand and was stabbed in my palm. I collapsed after the attack.”

MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa condemned the “barbaric and cowardly attack” on Twitter saying it “points to deteriorating security of persons, rule of law and the human rights situation in Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe must be safe for all who live in it!”

Chamisa’s party blamed “suspected State agents” and “robbers” for the attack, urging police to apprehend Khumalo’s attackers swiftly to determine the motive.

“She is still in hospital and in great pain. Her family is doing all it can to take care of her. We want the police to hunt down these attackers so that we know who did this and why,” said MDC Alliance deputy spokesman Felix Magalela Mafa Sibanda.

Khumalo said she suffered stab wounds to her right hand when she blocked an attacker who was aiming for her head with a knife.

Pictures released by her party also showed visible beating marks to her knees.

“These are the injuries suffered by national chair, Thabitha Khumalo, who was attacked at her home by suspected state agents at her home yesterday. She was vomiting and remains poorly following the attack,” the MDC Alliance tweeted.

“We wish our National Chair, Hon. Thabitha Khumalo, a speedy recovery. She was violently attacked by robbers at her home in Bulawayo yesterday in suspicious circumstances. Get well soon, our warrior queen!”
Police spokesman Paul Nyathi was not available for comment.
