Machete wielding gold miners strike again, as onePolice officer dies.

One Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) officer, was killed whilst another one was left for dead at Good Hope Mine Brompton Battlefields on Saturday in yet another illegal gold mining related incident.

This was confirmed by Police Spokesperson Assist Comm Paul Nyathi to this publication.

Police are investigating an incident that happened at Brompton mines in Battlefields Kadoma where some artisanal miners engaged in acts of violence in the process attacking police officers who had been deployed there. One was struck with a machete and he died and the other one was attacked and is currently admitted at a local hospital.

“As police we are strongly warning people who are engaging in acts of violence that certainly the law will take its cause. We want to urge minors that whatever disputes they have, they should not resort to violence,” said Nyathi.

It is reported that 27th of this month at around 11 am,the now deceased Constable Hokoyo was deployed at Good Hope Mine in the company of other three male officers and one female officer.

The following day on Saturday at around 2pm, the accused persons with many others all still at large proceeded to the vicinity armed with machetes, catapults and axes and forcefully took control of the mine shafts thereby dispersing the genuine miners who were extracting gold ore.

The police reacted to the accused persons approach and fired warning shots into the air to scare away the accused persons but they did not take hid. Instead the accused persons advanced towards the police in a bid to attack.

One of the accused attacked Const Hokoyo from behind and struck him once at the back of the head using a log and disarmed him leaving the police officer with no option but to escape from the attack. At the same time the accused disarmed Const Kamhukabefore escaping from the scene.

The rest of the police officers managed to escape after noticing their lives were under threat.

The accused persons made a frantic chase to constable Hokoyo and struck him all over his body using machetes and axes leaving him lying lifeless. Hokoyo later died due to injuries sustained as a result of the attack.

The body of the deceased was conveyed to Kadoma general hospital mortuary for post mortem.

The police have since launched a man hunt for the suspects, with teams from the support unit, district reaction groups and dog section already on the ground.
