The Zimbabwe Miners Federation (ZMF) has officially re-elected Henrietta Rushwaya as its president for another five year term.

Rushwaya retained her position after running uncontested for the position.

ZMF’s unanimous decision to reinstate Rushwaya is despite her pending gold smuggling case in which she was granted $100,000 bail by the High Court.

Rushwaya was arrested last year in October after she was caught trying to smuggle 6kgs of gold to Dubai.

After the scandal she was suspended as the federation’s president.

However, yesterday the federations’ Secretary General, Morgan Mugawu, defended the decision to retain Rushwaya.

Speaking to a local newspaper, Mugawu said Rushwaya is innocent until proven guilty.

“As you know, we had suspended our president Madam Henrietta Rushwaya last year in October.

“Now, as a national executive we sat and considered that she is out on bail and unanimously agreed that she be reinstated.

“We arrived at this decision in accordance with our organisation’s constitution and also anchored on the fact that she remains innocent until proven guilty.”
