Harare City Council (HCC) is failing to meet its daily target of graves dug per day due to a shortage of gravediggers.

This comes at a time when Zimbabwe has recorded an increase in Covid-19 related deaths and confirmed cases.

Writing on their twitter, the council said there was still a manpower shortage.

In an interview with Bustop TV, the City of Harare spokesperson, Michael Chideme said council is working hard to address the issue.

“We are working to increase the number of dug graves so that we do not run out of graves.

“The number of burials per day has increased to 15 per day, this is because on average 7 burials are Covid-19 related,” he added.

At at 16 July 2021 Zimbabwe had recorded 102 Covid-19 related deaths and 2 296 new cases.

The country has a total of 81 168 confirmed cases with 51 139 are recoveries and a total 2 520 deaths.

A total of 1 096 002 people have received their first vaccination jab against Covid-19.
