Government has announced that it has reviewed upwards the maize roller meal subsidy in order to maintain the ZWL 70 retail price per 10kg bag

In a press statement issued by the Industry and Commerce minister Dr Sekai Nzenza, government has promised to continue reviewing the subsidies in an effort to make the mealie meal affordable to many.

“Government reviewed the maize roller meal programme in the wake of adjustments to the price of grain to millers.

“Cognisance of the Covid 19 pandemic, government is commited to ensure that the price of basic commodities especially maize roller meal should remain within the reach of the vulnerable,” said Nzenza.

Mealie meal has become one of the scarcer basic commodities in the country with long queues and pandamonium characterising the purchase of the staple food everywhere.

“It is in this spirit that government will continue to subsidise the roller meal program so that it remains at ZWL 70 per 10 kg bag, whilst the millers will continue to deliver to retailers at ZWL 63 PER 10kg bag and receiving their subsidy adjustment”.

According to the ministry, millers will now get a subsidy of 216 from the ZWL 73,90, ” government will continue to review these prices in consultation with stakeholders,” added the Minister.
