Government has with immediate effect, instructed all the provinces, secondary schools, colleges, universities together with vaccination centres to commence vaccination for 16 and 17 year olds.
Information Minister Senator Monica Mutsvangwa confirmed the new development while addressing the media at the Ministry Information Boardroom in Harare, Tuesday afternoon.
According to Mutsvangwa, the decision is based on scientific data that was provide by health experts in line with the Medical Control Authority of Zimbabwe.
“All the provinces, secondary schools, colleges, universities and vaccination centres are advised to commence the vaccination campaign of the 16-17 year old age group with immediate effect.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the only vaccine type eligible for the 16-17 year old age group is the Sinovac Covid-19 vaccine.
“Based on the available scientific data in line with Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe guidance, the specialist paediatricians have recommended the vaccination of the 16-17 years age group with the Sinovac vaccine,” she said.
Government is aiming at achieving herd immunity against Covid-19 by next month (December), with the ministry of health revealing that they are targeting to vaccinate 10 million people.
Meanwhile, also present at the address was the Minister of Health who is also the Vice President of Zimbabwe, Dr Constantino Chiwenga.
VP Chiwenga extended the level two of lockdown by another two weeks.
