Masvingo – The Zimbabwe Council of Churches (ZCC) together with Ecumenical Church Leaders Forum (ECLF) have made donations to the seven district referral hospitals across Masvingo.

The two organizations are doing all they can to help protect frontline workers and also provide food aid to struggling vulnerable communities  during the Covid -19  pandemic.

The Zimbabwe Council of Churches donated Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to Gutu Rural Hospital and Morgenster Mission Hospital while the Ecumenical Church Leaders Forum extended its hand to Bikita rural, Nyika and St Antony hospitals.

The donations included gloves, goggles, infrared thermometers, N95 masks, three-ply surgical masks, hand sanitizer and disposable gowns.

The Ecumenical Church Leaders Forum leader Nigel Zhou said they are complementing Government’s effort to fight Covid – 19.

“The government’s efforts need to be complemented as they are trying to eradicate and fight against Covid -19. The front line workers need to be protected as they are in the fore front to help the fight against Covid -19. The donations will go a long way in adding value to the fight against COVID-19 and in protecting the front-line health workers who are at high risk of contracting the disease.

“As churches, we are complementing government efforts to fight the deadly pandemic and I hope this gesture will go a long way in the fight against Covid -19,” said Zhou.

He also encouraged people to join in the fight and prevent the spread of the virus especially now when we are faced with the third strain.

“As a nation we have to work together and fight together for a better cause. Being reluctant will not help anything and the fact that the lockdown has been eased does not mean it’s the end for Covid -19. The virus is still there and new infections are being recorded every day”.

Zimbabwe Council of Churches Humanitarian Services Director Maria Dendere said these donations prove that churches are still visible.

“The donations we have made as churches prove that we are visible and helping in times when the nation is facing a difficult situation, not only Zimbabwe but worldwide. It is the duty of humanitarian agencies to intervene with food aid and other forms of support in times of need as well as complementing government efforts to cushion vulnerable communities from the effects of hunger.
