Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) today, Friday held a massive protest at High glen District offices. The teachers were drawn from Harare peri-urban areas and farming communities in Mashonaland West and East districts.

Over 150 teachers protested outside the offices calling for implementation of the 2012 collective bargaining agreement which provided for a US$520.00 basic salary for the least paid teacher.

The government has eroded this salary by inconsistent fiscal and monetary policies which have seen teachers earn less than US$25.00 per month.

Teachers also rejected the US$75.00 allowance for three months as a fallacy and 50% nominal salary increment in RTGS.

ARTUZ has reinstate that the fight for emancipation of teachers and US$ salary is urgent. It must be implemented urgently as the economy has already dollarized amid failed government policies.

The vibrant teachers union had vowed to continue demonstrating in the whole country upholding section 59 of the constitution of Zimbabwe.

Todays demonstrations came at a time when government is said to be on high alert amid potentially explosive mass protests this month.

Sources within government have confirmed plans by authorities to crush the protests through arresting those suspected of inciting the citizens before the day of the planned protests.
