Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) members were today jn a flash city demonstration at the newly erected Mbuya Nehanda Statue in Harare’s Central Business District.

The teachers are protesting against poor wages and a dilapidating education system.

Writing on their official twitter account, the vibrant teachers union stated that they have honored their promise to demonstrate at the recently erected statue and promised to continue with the demonstrations to save the education sector.

“We promised and we delivered. We were at Mbuya Nehanda statue drawing inspiration to #SaveOurEducationZW . A season to #SaveOurEducationZW is upon us,” read the tweet.

Protestors were holding placards inscribed, “MBUYA NEHANDA TAUYA NAZVO ZVICHEMO ZVEMATEACHER” (Mbuya Nehanda We have come  with teacher’s grievances.)

Some sections of society hinted that the statue which is located corner Julius Nyerere Way and Samora Machel Avenue would become a demonstration site.

Journalist and government critique Hopewell Chin’ono said it was a disgrace for the government to squander money on a statue when the country’s hospitals were in a state of collapse, short of medicines and reliant on donors during a pandemic.

The three meter bronze statue mounted on a 1.5  high pedestal was unveiled last week on Africa day, 25 May 2021 eleven months after its construction began on in June 2020.

Construction of the statue was expected to be completed by August 28 2020 and in December of the same year, President Emmerson Mnangagwa ordered the statue to be redone following a public outcry.

Costs for the construction project are reportedly over R3 669 085.
